River Avenue Cleanup and Improvement Pictures

In celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day 2014, B.I.G. teamed up with the local Boy Scouts for our 1st Avenue Beautification Project. We cleaned up garbage and debris from along the strip of land by the River, planted a tree and flowers, as well as installed two brand new benches for residents and visitors to enjoy some beautiful Allegheny River views. Check out our pictures below!

2nd annual street fair

It feels like just yesterday we had our first ever Brackenridge Avenue Street Fair. But now our Second Annual Street Fair is just around the corner! Save the date for Saturday, August 16th, between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Once again we will have music, food, and games for all ages, as well as a wide selection of exhibitors. We will be on Brackenridge Avenue between Morgan and Locust streets (rain location: Pioneer Hose Company, Morgan Ave). It was great to see so many of you come out and have a great time last year; and we look forward to seeing you again, plus many new faces as well!

We will be posting details here and on our Facebook page, closer to the event, including the schedule of performers on our main stage. So stay tuned!

B.I.G. upcoming events

It's been quiet on the blog front lately- but rest assured B.I.G has been hard at work behind the scenes to build on the momentum we generated in 2013 and plan our events for the New Year! We are very grateful for the support we have received from our neighbors and friends and greatly look forward to focusing that positive energy to build results in 2014.

First a note on meetings: our meeting times are on the last Monday of each month, at 7:00 PM, at the Brackenridge Borough building (1000 Brackenridge Ave.) Weather permitting, some summer meetings may be held outdoors in the riverfront park, we will let you know beforehand if we do. And a big thanks to the Borough for hosting us!

Looking forward to March, at the end of the month we will have a booth at the Pioneer Hose Company Craft and Vendor Fair. The event will be held on Sunday, March 30th from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the fire station, 128 Morgan St, Brackenridge PA. There will be local crafters displaying and selling their wares, vendors from local businesses, and several food options. It promises to be a great event- we'd love to see you there!

In April ecology will be on our minds, with two "green" holidays in the month: Arbor Day on April 22nd, and Earth Day on the 25th. Appropriately we plan to kick off two of the initial projects in our pipeline in that month: tree-planting along Morgan and Brackenridge Avenues, and improving the walking trail in Riverfront Park. We will be coordinating the details with Brackenridge Borough, and hopefully may be able to use the skills and talents of a local Eagle Scout candidate. As we nail down specific dates and info we will continue to post them here.

Another ongoing project is "sprucing up" the historical marker along Freeport Road beside Prospect Cemetery, dedicated to Henry Marie Brackenridge, the man for whom our borough is named. It's fallen into some disrepair, and we want to fix it up to honor our town's namesake. We may have to wait for a thaw first, though!

We have some more mid-to-longer term projects in the pipeline as well that we are continually working to bring to fruition. Additionally we are working through the long process of obtaining official 501(c)3 certification and hammering out our by-laws and organizational structure. We are very grateful for the support we have, and continue to receive for these efforts, from the Borough and from residents of Brackenridge and throughout the Valley. We look forward to making you all proud and continuing to work hard to help our town reach its potential!

We welcome you to attend any of our meetings, or drop us a line at brackenridgeimprovementgroup@gmail.com if you want to know more!
